New Deck, Existing Home
If you are having a new deck built, there are several things that you must do to protect your investment. Make sure that the builder understands the applicable codes regarding new deck construction. Make sure that the deck meets or exceeds the minimum standards and codes. Let the builder know that you will have a certified deck inspector check the deck for deficiencies. Have the deck footings/foundation, deck framing, and final finish inspected
- Get a detailed plan of the deck showing location on the property, dimensions, sections, and fastening details. Have this plan reviewed to make sure it meets or exceeds current minimum standards.
- Make sure that the contractor has the required license(s).
- Ask the builder for references.
- Get a signed contract that spells out the time frame, the materials, and the finishes.
- Get a certificate of insurance from the contractor that names you as an additional insured.
- Make sure the builder obtains any required permits and that they are closed out at the end of the project.
- Take daily photos of the project and keep a daily log of the work that has been done.
- Have the deck inspected by a certified deck inspector.
